What is Diwrnod Shwmae Su’mae?
What is Shwmae Sumae Day?
We celebrated the first Shwmae Sumae day on October 15, 2013 to promote the idea of starting every conversation with shwmae, su’mae or shwdi! The event aims to show that the Welsh language belongs to us all – fluent speakers, learners or those shy about their Welsh. The Day is celebrated annually on the 15th of October
Who celebrates Shwmae Sumae day?
YOU! It’s an opportunity to have fun and share the language – in the shop, leisure centre, at work, with friends. In the past it has been celebrated by schools, restaurants, shops, businesses and radio stations.
How can you celebrate Shwmae Su’mae Day this year?
Why not record a video of yourself enjoying an activity or pastime in Welsh and post it on social media? We’d love to know how you have fun / hwyl while speaking Welsh!
Who is co-ordinating Shwmae Sumae Day ?
Mentrau Iaith Cymru have been co-ordinating the celebrations since 2024, with the 22 sister organisations promoting the campaign in their local area. There are teams working locally to organise Welsh-language activities all over Wales, all year round. To find out more about your nearest ‘Menter Iaith’, go to: https://mentrauiaith.cymru/
