‘Hapus i Siarad/Happy to Talk’ campaign to launch onShwmae Su’mae Day
Mentrau Iaith Cymru (MIC) is encouraging local businesses to join its ‘Hapus i Siarad/Happy to Talk’ campaign in the run up to Shwmae Su’mae Day on 15 October. The National organisation, that supports a network of twenty-two local Welsh language initiatives around Wales, hopes the launch will inspire Welsh speakers of all levels to use the language every day in their communities.
Following a successful pilot scheme in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Ceredigion, Flintshire and Wrexham earlier this year, businesses throughout Wales will now be able to pledge support by displaying a poster showing they’re happy to speak Welsh with customers.
Myfanwy Jones, Director of Mentrau Iaith Cymru says, “MIC is delighted to lead the Diwrnod Shwmae Su’mae Day celebrations this year following the fantastic work by the Dathlu’r Gymraeg organisations for over a decade. As small businesses play such a key role in our daily lives, where better to celebrate the Welsh language than in the heart of our communities? Using our network of twenty-two Mentrau Iaith throughout Wales, we will provide support for those small businesses where Welsh-speaking staff are happy to speak Welsh with customers. The campaign will launch on 15 October to coincide with Diwrnod Shwmae Su’mae Day.”
Local businesses keen to take part in the scheme will receive a poster along with tips on how to encourage Welsh speakers, and learners in particular, to speak the language and build confidence. Businesses interested in joining the scheme can contact Mentrau Iaith Cymru or their local Welsh Language Initiative for further information.
As well as encouraging small businesses to join in the celebrations, Mentrau Iaith Cymru is inviting organisations and individuals to hold events to mark Shwmae Su’mae Day. Digital packs will be available, full of ideas, posters and advice on how to have fun while speaking Welsh in school, at work, at home or with friends. (shwmae.cymru)
